I often find it strange that players and dungeon masters limit themselves to the main pantheons of their worlds. When calling to mind the most iconic heroes of the fantasy genre I can think of very few who were content to worship at the alters of the common gods. Elric, Conan, Lord Spitfire, Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, all paid homage to deities wildly at odds to those of the common populace, considered evil, barbarous, or at the very least strange by the world at large. On top of this we have the meta-gaming concerns few are willing to voice, but all have thought at some point, namely that a lot of the existing fantasy deities and demigods aren’t very good (They can’t all be Blibdoolpoolp I suppose… ), that and it’s genuinely difficult to get a feeling for your god and the tenants of their faith when all you have to go on is a (very small) paragraph and a picture of their sigil!
