The massive ballroom at the Hyatt Regency downtown was already buzzing with the anticipated arrival of Jacksonville's next mayor when it was announced Alvin Brown would be accompanied by televangelist T.D. Jakes.
That's when it got ecstatic at the One Vision, One City interfaith prayer breakfast.
"He's such a powerful influence in Christendom, period," one minister, Lewis Williams, said of Bishop Jakes, a Dallas megachurch pastor known worldwide for his multimedia and social outreach ministry.
Held the day before Brown's inauguration as Jacksonville's first black mayor, the prayer breakfast drew 1,500 and was designed to bestow blessings on Brown and help him see and feel the religious support he enjoys citywide, participants said.

In September, four young men filed lawsuits alleging Long using his position and gifts to coerce them into sexual relationships. Long, pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in the Atlanta area, told his congregation a few days after the suits were filed that he would vigorously fight the charges.
When the allegations against Long became public, Jakes publicly addressed the case before his own congregation, The Potter's House in Dallas, saying, "Christians should just pray." He also told his flock during the Sunday service, "When all this is over, one thing is for sure – somebody, if not everybody in it, is going to need the blood [of Jesus Christ]."
