The Celtic ringed cross is an ancient symbol found throughout the British Isles. This wall-hanging version, made in Ireland of fine parian china, makes an inspired gift to adorn any room in the house. Belleek's signature basket-weave pattern sculpted into the cross gives a textural richness, and delicate green shamrocks hand-painted on the main shaft add an Irish touch. And, each cross is hand-signed by the Belleek craftsperson who made it. The glossy white cross measures 3-1/2 by 7-1/2 inches and can be gently dusted or wiped clean with a damp cloth.
Parian, invented in Great Britain in the 1840s for sculpting classical figurines, was particularly popular in Victorian times. Because of the china's marble-like translucence, the name derived from the Greek island of Paros, famous for its prized white marble. Belleek parian ware exhibits exceptional craftsmanship and is esteemed among collectors worldwide. --Ann Bieri

The Celtic ringed cross is an ancient symbol found throughout the British Isles. This standing version, made in Ireland of fine parian china, makes an inspired gift that can adorn a dresser, shelf, or windowsill. Sculpted details add richness, and the four openings between the ring and the cross allow light to shine through. Delicate green shamrocks are hand-painted on the base for an Irish touch. Orangeman gears up for fundraising cycle
04.07.11
A SENIOR Co Armagh Orangeman will have more reason than most to complain of tired limbs following this weekend’s annual Rossnowlagh parade.
That is because George Ruddock will have completed an estimated 180-mile cycle to the Donegal venue prior to participating in the traditional pre-Twelfth march.
The worshipful district master of Gilford, 53, sets off on his arduous cross-border fundraising trek this morning from the harbour steps in Carrickfergus.
The keen amateur cyclist chose the Co Antrim town as his symbolic starting point given it was where King William landed prior to travelling to the Boyne in 1690.
