Jo Smith from Wakefield took the family service. Jo started with a memory verse from Psalm 112 v 9 – ‘He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor, his righteousness endures forever.’ As it was Whitsuntide/Pentecost the gifts of the spirit were illustrated on the screen: wisdom, fortitude, piety, knowledge, understanding, counsel and fear of the Lord. The next service will be taken by Malcolm Jacob.

The service of worship for Pentecost Sunday at the Methodist Church, was led by Francis Priestnall, a reader in the church. She led the congregation’s thoughts on how the gift of the Holy Spirit was given to the disciples and many believers, and how that gift is always with us as we live out our Christian lives. Readings about this wonderful event were given by Rosalyn Beevers from Acts of the Apostles and Maxine Lodge from the book of Isaiah. Prayers were led by Peter Holt and Beryl Holt. The stewards were Joan Bond and Diana Hunt, and a gift of flowers for the communion table was from Margaret Firth. After the service everyone enjoyed coffee and biscuits given by Maxine Lodge, and all shared in a cake celebrating the birthday of the Church, brought by Francis.

Of course, the service was always the same too. I could easily mouth the words along with the pastor (usually my own father):

“Take eat: this is my body broken for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.”
