Sunday best

08.08.11

Recent Sunday afternoon I drove up early the road Butler, slowing in the light of Falmouth near the old post office building, which rose from the delivery company to the rescue. It is now a Hispanic Pentecostal church, and it seemed as if the services were about to start because people were parking their vehicles and walk resolutely towards the construction of those and two.

Without exception, the parishioners were well dressed, men just-out-of-the-bag of clean shirts and jackets and pants pressed down, women in full printed dresses gaily. The atmosphere was one of happy expectations. Most of the arrivals was a Bible or a baby. An intake officer spoke to each one. As I say, I was in the light of Falmouth, so I had plenty of time to watch.

Frank's homily wove together the Gospel lesson and the tension between national pride and national shame that Americans of conscience and good will feel in the...
