Canoes, boats, docks, and paddles — these are things you would expect to be crafted in the sawdust filled workshops of the northern wooded lake lands of Muskoka.

But mezuzahs?  Not so much.

Yet in a small lakeside cabin in Algonquin Park, a seasoned craftsman hunches over a work table, jeweler’s saw in hand, finessing the Hebrew letter “shin”, a Star of David, and miniature shapes that will grace a one-of-a-kind mezuzah posted on someone’s door.

The artist is Ric von Neumann and he’s putting the finishing touches on a meticulously detailed guitar, four inches in size, complete with strings and mother of pearl inlayed frets. Soon it will become a mezuzah that will hang on the doorpost or gate of an avid musician, for whom new meaning will be added when he boasts he’s played guitar “religiously” since a young age.
